I waste my time trolling the internwebs so that you don’t have to. Here’s what I read, or watched, this week that I think is worth your time:
- What comes after YouTube stardom? Grace Helbig is figuring it out – a Washington Post article on the transition YouTube star, Grace Helbig, is trying to make from YouTube star, to something else. What’s interesting t0 us is how she built a brand out of just her personality, hard work and persistence. There’s a lesson there for YouTube marketeers, if you’re willing to take it.
- 12 Years a Slave D.P. Sean Bobbitt on Handheld Cinematography | Filmmaker Magazine – there’s more than an hour and a half of video here but it is worth sitting through.
- Smart Passive Income: The DOs and DON’Ts of Online Video with Caleb Wojcik – there’s a lot of fluff and self-promotion here, but this episode is still worth your time on one of your commutes this week.
- Techniques and Tools for Creative Storytelling with HDSLRs – another free, video tutorial, this time from B&H. Another long one. Another one worth your time.
- How to Remove an Unwanted Logo from Clothing in Adobe After Effects – if you create videos for any length of time, at some point you’ll be asked to do this.
- Choosing the Best Camera to Tell Your Story – “Just because a story calls for you to use a 5D Mark III this week, when you had a fully kitted-up EPIC last week, doesn’t mean one story is going to be better than another.“
- 2014: The Year Prankvertising Jumps the Shark? – putting aside that I hate this newly invented, amalgam word, and that, how new is a concept Candid Camera was rocking back in the 70’s, it is still a trend you should be aware of.
- News Shooter | China Heavyweight – how a successful feature documentary was shot on Canon 5D mkII – with all the talk of the ARRI dominating Sundance submissions, it’s nice to see a film using more modest equipment and still looking great.
- Create Your Video Plan for 2014
- Will 2014 Be the Year That Smartphone Filmmaking Goes Mainstream?
- Are Practical FX making a come-back in Movies? – I hope so. At some point there’s going to be a backlash against CGI; please let it be sooner rather than later.
